This study explores starch-based bioplastics as a sustainable alternative to non-biodegradable nitrile gloves used in medical facilities. Using a heat-polymerization process with corn or potato starch, water, vinegar, and glycerin, researchers developed flexible, semi-transparent materials with a 12–24 month shelf life. Biodegradability was tested under varying environmental conditions, showing promising results. The findings suggest starch-based polymers could reduce medical plastic waste and may eventually be adapted for use in packaging and potentially medical gloves.

Ying Chen has worked with grades 6-12 students for over 12 years. She has taught at various charter high schools throughout New York City as both a STEM and Special Education teacher. Courses that she has taught are Earth Science, Biology, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Environmental Science, Exploring Computer Science, Forensic Science, and many more.
